about us

One of the Bluegrass regions newest polo clubs, Commonwealth Polo Club began in 2015 by Jorge Vasquez and Juan Valerdi. With over a decade spent in the region, Jorge and Juan selected a farm capable of offering a convenient location and quality land highlighted by an enclosed polo arena for all levels of player. Home of the University of Kentucky Polo Team and Commonwealth High School Team, live polo matches, and events such as Noches de Polo, Commonwealth Polo Club has something for everyone.

Juan valerdI

co-founder

Juan's interest in Polo started when he was young. His father is a veterinarian and he played Polo as a hobby, introducing Juan and his brothers to the sport.  He competed in different tournaments in his hometown, General Levalle, Córdoba, Argentina, and surrounding areas. However, his career as a professional Polo player started in the United States. He started out working as a groom and later on had the opportunity to start playing practices and making his own polo horses. By that time, he was 0 goal handicap. After a few tournaments, he was raised to 2 goal handicap. He brought a few horses from Argentina, made in his hometown by his brother and father, in order to have good horses and play better.
Playing some tournaments in South Carolina, Kentucky, and Florida, he was raised from 2 to 3 handicap in 2003, and then for 3 to 4 handicap in 2004. He has played most of his career at Lexington Polo Club, in Lexington, Kentucky, but has traveled to many different states according to the season. He kept this handicap until the end of 2013, where I was raised to 5 goal handicap. One year later, I came back to 4 goal handicap. Since then, he has played and trained young horses to make them future polo players. In one sentence about his work, "I love what I do."
